Kennedy and the resignation of Richard Nixon. Their journeys take them from Chicago to LA and San Francisco, New York and Paris, Saigon, Taos and Santa Fe. Luke Bernstein is obsessed with Emma Martinette who is an exotic dancer using the name Lolly Gabor. Their on-again off-again relationship takes them to New York and to California at the time of the Summer of Love. Emma’s brother, Bernard, pursues poor little rich girl Joyce Townsend in the communes of New Mexico and the cafés of Paris. DANCE BENEATH A DIAMOND SKY: A NOVEL OF THE SIXTIES by Byron Grush
This is a well-told complex story of several friends in the Sixties, how their lives interweave with each other and the events surrounding them during that explosive decade. Grush’s prose is cinematic, combining lots of action with a strong sense of place and time, full of well-told details which carry the story along as well as anchor us in the events of the day. It’s a good overview of those times, mixed with good story telling. Grush combines the irony of optimism and menace which went hand in hand in those days.

Grush’s earlier books have almost all been historical fiction, with vivid characters placed in the midst of big events as the West is settled. They are enjoyable books which are also strongly cinematic. A reader can wish they were all part of a long series, it’s so easy to picture the scenes Grush delivers. But once a reader has been through the same events the author has described, the writing is even more sharp, more purposed, and vivid events come back with the richness which closer knowledge from the reader lends to the writing. Grush’s writing improves with each book, and DANCE BENEATH A DIAMOND SKY shines like a gem in the string of tales he tells. This reader is eager for his next book. Thank goodness he writes them fairly regularly.
